Kiwi indie-pop legends The Bats are heading back to our shores to launch their all-new album Free All The Monsters. Free All The Monsters will be released on October 15 on Mistletone Records / Inertia in Australia, and on the mighty Flying Nun label in NZ.
Free All The Monsters is classic Bats, instantly catchy and revealing ever more depths with each listen. Aussie audiences can also expect some reworkings from The Bats’ much-loved and timeless back catalogue, but this is no nostalgia trip. The Bats are at the height of their powers, touring in their original lineup of Robert Scott (vocals, lead guitars); Kaye Woodward (guitars, vocals); Paul Kean (bass, guitar, backing vocals); and Malcolm Grant (drums).
To quote a review from their Australian tour last year: “Is there a word for better than perfect? If there is, New Zealand’s The Bats are it. Like a band reborn, The Bats absolutely smash this show — they’re back for real, and they rule.”

Electronic experimentalists of the most endearing order, Lucky Dragons’ live shows are the epitome of coming together – less performance, more all-in, collaborative jam session where the shape of the song is dictated by the audience as much as it is the band.
Incorporating a bewildering array of instruments, percussive elements and other music making devices for which no names yet exist, a Lucky Dragons gig is in essence an entirely new form of social music making, an improvised free-for-all where the barrier between artist and audience ceases to exist.
Frontman of local heroes Crayon Fields, Geoffrey O’Connor’s solo sound is a quiet, artfully distilled incarnation of that group’s brand of naive pop. Intimate and familiar, this is the music of old AM stations made by a man entirely captivated by the now.

Rightly renowned as one of the pre-eminent forces of the noise art movement, Black Dice have built a reputation as one of the most mercurial, abrasive and overwhelming live music experiences touring the world today.
From their origins as an occasionally violent post-hardcore outfit in the late 90s, through to the improvised distortion epics that marked their middle years, Black Dice have emerged in 2011 as a techno-influenced amalgam of noise atmospherics, jaggedly programmed beats and snatched, scrambled sample work.
Feared and respected in equal measure, Black Dice’s live shows are relentless audio-visual assaults, exercises in virtuosic musical cohesiveness and defiant experimentation that will splinter opinion and also, potentially, your eardrums. Love it or hate it, there will most certainly be no other experience like it at this year’s Festival.
Listening to Lucky Dragons is like having your preconceptions of what music should be gently disassembled and recombined by two of your oldest friends. Armed with a varied and ever-changing array of synthesisers, loop pedals, wind instruments and percussive elements, the Lucky Dragons live experience is half interactive art project, half neo-hippy freak jam, and all shimmering sonic dreamscape.
Opening act just announced will be Kangaroo Skull, a new band featuring Rohan Rebeiro & Ben Andrew from My Disco. DJing between bands will be China’s king of 8-bit techno Sulumi, the purveyor of some of the finest, take-no prisoners electro-glitch-house this side of a souped up Sega Mega Drive.

Japanese post-rock legends Mono make their eagerly awaited return to Australia, this time joining their singular blend of arcing guitar and surging drums with the majesty of a full orchestra in order to reprise their otherworldly Holy Ground performance.
An instrumental rock onslaught with tracks that often stretch well beyond the ten minute mark, Mono’s music plays out as a sequence of symphonically choreographed exercises in emotional decompression and vast aural spectacle, journeying from moments of haunting quietude to emotionally charged climaxes of feedback, percussion and prodigious guitar work.
To see Mono perform is to be transported and overwhelmed, lost in the spell of a band standing at the precipice of the tragic and the sublime.
Mono are joined by Melbourne multiinstrumentalist and recent Mistletone signing James Wallace, AKA Wintercoats. As the name suggests, Wallace trades in a gauzy brand of wintry intimacy – ethereal fragments of orchestral pop that seem to channel the muted palette of dreamed snowscapes.
Armed with violin, piano, glockenspiel, guitar, his enveloping voice and an overworked loop pedal, Wallace makes music that is simple but cocooning, a gentle fire set against the creeping cold.

Mistletone is proud to present for the first time in over six years, the return of legendary New York sound experimentalists Black Dice for a special show at Oxford Art Factory on Friday, October 7. Tickets $40 + booking fee on sale now through Moshtix.
Los Angeles filmmaker Danny Perez, best known for his work on Animal Collective’s ODDSAC film and for providing Panda Bear‘s incredible live visuals, will provide a brain-melting visual component to Black Dice’s show. Joining Black Dice will be Los Angeles duo Lucky Dragons on their return Australian tour, plus local DIY no-wave adventurers Holy Balm to open this sumptuous evening of bewildering, exhilarating electronic experimentalism.
