WINTERCOATS MELBOURNE EP LAUNCH: Fri 4 November, Workers Club with special guests Tantrums + The Townhouses + Elizabeth Rose.

A master of ethereal delicacies, Melbourne’s Wintercoats (aka James Wallace) combines his chameleonic compositional talents and profound arrangement dexterity to create aural artworks of fragility and grandeur. His debut self-released EP Cathedral adventured through sweeping and idyllic vocal harmonies underpinned by brash and heavily reverbed string loops.

After a series of singles released, including a collaboration with Montreal’s Sea Oleena, Wintercoats will be releasing Sketches, his long-awaited follow up EP.

Wintercoats will be joined by Tantrums, Elizabeth Rose, and The Townhouses to celebrate the launch of Sketches as a 12” vinyl and download through Mistletone Records / Inertia.

The Orbweavers launch their eagerly awaited new album Loom at Northcote Social Club on Sunday 30 October. This will be a matinee show, with doors opening at 2pm and support from The Townhouses. Tickets on sale now from the venue.

Loom will be released on October 28 by Mistletone Records / Inertia.

“The Moon rises at the end of our street, over the Merri Creek. Most nights we walk with Fern, a retired racing greyhound, down towards the water, which follows an 800,000 year old lava flow – still visible as large swathes of basalt along the bank. Melbourne is threaded with waterways heading south towards the sea. Over the years streams, floodplains and even a saltwater blue lake in North Melbourne have been filled and realigned to expedite industrialisation of the city. The land itself still holds a memory, and during a wet season, water finds its old way home.

“By the late 1800s the Merri Creek and surrounds had been overtaken by bluestone quarries and clay pits for brick making. Later, after World War I, knitting mills and textile factories rose in the narrow streets. Most of these early industries have now gone, but remnants are visible: stone footings, chimneys and saw-tooth rooves to catch the light. The past is not completely erased – garment factories still hum in the backstreets; the clay soil cracks in summer and clings in winter. Casurarinas have been replanted along the creek bank, over long filled quarry holes, their fallen needles are a muted bed for our feet. These are some of the stories we were thinking about during the writing and recording of Loom.”

Mistletone proudly presents the return of New Zealand via New York’s Bachelorette, launching her self-titled album at Goodgod Small Club on Saturday, October 22nd with support from Donny Benet and Jasmina Maschina. Tickets $20 + booking fee on sale now from Moshtix.

Described variously as a one-woman Animal Collective and a female Syd Barrett, Bachelorette (AKA Annabel Alpers) has a singular brand of psychedelic computer folk pop, comprising expansive, layered loops and radiant multi-tracked harmonies. A strange, enveloping tangle of synthesised melody and claustrophobic texture built around Annabel’s raw and endlessly multi-layered voice, Bachelorette will take you on a sonic journey to a universe sustained by the logic of androids, cities, waveforms and love.

Supports for Bachelorette’s Sydney show are Sydney’s own sophisticated lover Donny Benet, continuing his quest to become the most famous disco accordian/jazz bassist of the 21st century, and Melbourne via Berlin’s Jasmina Maschina who will open the evening with a culmination of sound, song and ambience, as her experimental electronic folk soundscapes transport you into her beautiful world of sonic adventure, strong emotions, electronics, songs and deep love.

Bachelorette, the third album by Bachelorette, was recently released by Mistletone Records in Australia, Drag City in the US and Souterrain Transmissions in Europe, and has been attracting the highest praise for its accomplished blend of 70s psychedelia, 80s electro-pop, 90s shoegaze and 00s electronica.

Kiwi indie-pop legends The Bats are heading back to our shores to launch their all-new album Free All The Monsters. Free All The Monsters will be released on October 15 on Mistletone Records / Inertia in Australia, and on the mighty Flying Nun label in NZ.

Free All The Monsters is classic Bats, instantly catchy and revealing ever more depths with each listen. Aussie audiences can also expect some reworkings from The Bats’ much-loved and timeless back catalogue, but this is no nostalgia trip. The Bats are at the height of their powers, touring in their original lineup of Robert Scott (vocals, lead guitars); Kaye Woodward (guitars, vocals); Paul Kean (bass, guitar, backing vocals); and Malcolm Grant (drums).
