MATMOS MELBOURNE SHOW: Sunday, January 19 @ Howler w/- special guests Always, Andrew Tuttle & DJ Simon Winkler. Tickets on sale now.
Performing with joy and humour, Matmos bring their live sonic experimentation to Australia for the first time and promise an evening of boundary-pushing sonic invention at new Melbourne venue, Howler (7-11 Dawson Street, Brunswick).
Avant-garde electronic duo Matmos experiment with noise to push the boundaries of pop music. Mining non-conventional sound sources and exploring bold ideas, Baltimore-based Drew Daniel and MC Schmidt have been producing music together since the mid-90s, delivering nine albums to date. Their latest release The Marriage of True Minds, based on experiments in telepathy, is an art object, a scientific report, a practical joke and a daring pop record. Since forming in 1997, Matmos have released a dozen influential albums and have collaborated with Björk, Antony and the Johnsons, Liars, David Pajo, Oneohtrix Point Never, Terry Riley, & many others. Their live show features stunning visuals and uses the live stage as a looking glass for an audience into their current sonic palette.
Always joins the lineup – by personal invitation of Matmos – for his first performance in over two years. Always is the nom de plume of Alex Vivian, known for his vocally led experiments towards language, organic sounds, popularised dance music. Since 2004, Always has shifted between sing song pop, spoken word, generic dance music, and abstracted vocal play.
Andrew Tuttle, based in Brisbane, Australia; creates sounds that explore the relationship between instrumentation, structure and genre within electronics and acoustics. Tuttle, usually solo, although occasionally in semi-regular and ad-hoc collaboration, creates a synthesis of electronic/acoustic instrumentation and genre, and improvisation/composition performed on computer, synthesiser, banjo, acoustic guitar, electronics, organ, and other instrumentation.
Simon Winkler, the dance-inducing shaman behind Triple R’s Breaking & Entering, will do us the honour of DJing before, between and after the performances.
Tickets on sale now.
