LIAM FINN + DAN KELLY: Sunday, November 29, 6:00pm: Liam Finn + Dan Kelly at Newtown Social Club. Tickets on sale now.

Liam Finn teams up with Dan Kelly; two great songwriterly forces, reckoning with each other in the double bill of our dreams for an intimate Sydney shows in Melbourne and Sydney. Tickets for Liam & Dan’s Sydney show at Newtown Social Club are also on sale now.

This solo tour is a rare chance to see New York-based Liam Finn in intimate solo mode. It is Liam’s first show back in Australia since 2011, and a return to his one-man band show last seen around the time of I’ll Be Lightning, his solo debut released shortly after disbanding Betchadupa in 2007. Since then he’s released two brilliant solo albums, FOMO (2011) and most recently, last year’s The Nihilist which featured the infectious single “Helena Bonham Carter”, and was a top ten chart hit in New Zealand.

Liam toured The Nihilist with his band the “Dream Team”, featuring his brother Elroy Finn, long time collaborator Elize-Jane Barnes, Cecilia Herbert and Jimmy Metherell, along with frequent live members Connan Mockasin, Kirin J Callinan and Matthew Eccles. Over the past 8 years Liam has toured the world performing with the likes of Wilco, Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam, Deerhoof and The Black Keys, performing at such famous venues as La Paradiso, Largo, Bowery Ballroom, La Scala and on the steps of the Sydney Opera House.
Dan Kelly’s brand new, fourth studio album Leisure Panic is an interactive travelogue of his life. It’s the real and hyper-real story of Dan’s last few years dropping out on the NSW North Coast, across jaunts to the Greek Isles and Berlin for inspiration and cheap cigarettes. Dan’s style has been described as romantic comedy noir Kraut rock soul folk with added Euro electro sadness jams floating in a melange of pre indie heritage.

Mistletone is thrilled to present SUCCESS by Liam Finn, a new work created especially for this one-off show at ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne), as part of Melbourne Music Week.

  • Friday November 20, 7:00-8:00pmSUCCESS by Liam Finn at ACMI (Federation Square, Melbourne). Tickets on sale now.

SUCCESS features original compositions and improvised pieces performed by Melbourne born musician and songwriter Liam Finn, alongside a filmic collaboration with New York directors Anthony and Alex. This engrossing show will consist of a series of vignettes and performance pieces in which Liam Finn tackles the concept of success; its subjectivity and the battle of insecurity and arrogance that ensues in its pursuit.

Alex and Anthony describe SUCCESS as “An experimental meditation on the human and technological ideology of success.” Liam Finn will be performing new songs, maniacally jumping between instruments, and triggering cassette tape loops to keep up with the unpredictable visuals. A show which will range from serene minimalism to heights of wild chaos.

The Field + Barker + Basic Mind @ Jimmy’s Den (PERTH)

Mistletone and Camp Doogs present the first ever Perth show by transcendent Swedish electronic artist The Field, aka Axel Willner, performing an all-hardware solo live set at Jimmy’s Den on Saturday, October 24. Joining The Field will be influential Berlin instigator Barker (Ostgut Ton / Leisure System – DJ set) and local dance luminary Basic Mind. Tickets on sale now from Ticketbooth.

The sublime, minimal soundscapes of Stockholm-born, Berlin-based Axel Willner—aka The Field—have been wowing listeners ever since 2007, when the release of his debut album From Here We Go Sublime saw him hailed as a new prophet in the techno scene. A dreamy blend of beats, atmospheric electronic and snatches of 60s pop, Willner melds his complex layering of sound to blissful perfection. Known for his playful, pop-inflected tunes, The Field’s solo show is a journey through the raw electronic side of his sound, encompassing work from From Here We Go Sublime and latest Cupid’s Head, performed live on the original hardware. Whether soaring in euphoria or throbbing with dense driving beats, the polished mastery of this singular talent is indisputable.

Perth support Barker might not be world-renowned, but his influence runs deep through the veins of Europe’s electronic music community. Barker started out promoting his own events under the name “Instrumentality”, an event that encouraged improvisation, collaboration, and electronic experiments every week for four years. During this time he built up a sizeable collection of analogue hardware that became the backbone for his work as Voltek. He’s probably best known as half of the Barker & Baumecker duo, and as the driving force behind the Leisure System residency at Berlin’s most influential club, Berghain.

“One of modern electronic music’s most satisfying auteurs” – Pitchfork

The sublime, minimal soundscapes of Stockholm-born, Berlin-based Axel Willner—aka The Field—have been wowing listeners ever since 2007, when the release of his debut album, From Here We Go Sublime, saw him hailed as a new prophet in the techno scene.

The Field sprung into existence in 2003 when Axel took to Buzz – a software program he still uses to make music today – to construct his ambient techno based on a stoic motorik and a perpetually rotating hook. He was picked up by Kompakt just a year later. His track ‘Love vs. Distance’ provided an early demonstration of how the Swede could take just four bars of sound and deftly deconstruct, alter and rebuild them to create a constantly changing canvas. His follow-up 2006 EP ‘Sun & Ice,’ imbued a sense of wandering expanse with tracks like ‘Over The Ice’ skipping along like skimmed stones over water.

It all came together in 2007 on the phenomenal success of debut LP From Here We Go Sublime, receiving a 9.0 and a place inside the Top 200 records of the decade by Pitchfork, as well as accolades from NME and the BBC. The Field embarked on his first tour including Pitchfork Music Festival, ATP, Sonar and Oya, trotting the globe armed with just a laptop. Come May 2009’s follow-up Yesterday & Today, Axel was joined by Dan Enqvist on bass, and Jesper Skarin on drums and went back on the road, including a first ever UK headlining circuit, a US tour support with The Juan Maclean and festival slots at Bestival, Roskilde and OFF Festival.

So to 2011 and the release of third album Looping State Of Mind, a release that came across as Axel’s most accomplished to date. “All the old influences are still there,” he admits, “but we’ve made a real attempt to grow the sound.”

2013 saw the release on Cupid’s Head, hailed by Resident Advisor as “one of Willner’s most affirming and beatific creations to date”.
